<p>Recently, I had the honor of meeting Gordon Kenyon, an incredibly brave, young individual with late-stage, metastatic prostate cancer, who was accompanied by his wife, Kim. They recounted how tests for an unexpected back injury ultimately revealed that he had prostate cancer-induced bone fractures. The unanticipated and devastating news about advanced prostate cancer turned his life upside down, as he and his family were immediately faced with a host of decisions.</p>
<p>Since his diagnosis, this former Marine, tri-athlete and father of three young children has undergone several treatments in an attempt to win the upper hand over the disease. His wife gives the term “pillar of strength” new meaning, seeking out the latest information and resources while he focuses on maintaining his health and providing for the long-term needs of his family. His captivating story impressed upon me the need for new treatment options as well as the critical role of education and support services to manage the baggage that accompanies this disease.</p>
<p>Prostate cancer is often misunderstood. About 32,000 men are estimated to die this year from the disease in the U.S. alone – enough men to fill approximately 400 metropolitan buses, including standing passengers – or 77 Boeing 747-400 airplanes. It’s also the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men in the United States. Yet, despite these staggering numbers, there’s often the misperception that prostate cancer is less dangerous than other cancers.</p>
<p>Legendary golf champion and prostate cancer survivor <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTaPbpeoe1c">Arnold Palmer</a> joins Centocor Ortho Biotech and Us TOO to <a href="http://www.centocororthobiotech.com/cobi/viewDocumentByTitleAlias.html?title=PR_09012010">launch My Prostate Cancer Roadmap</a>, a special resource for advanced prostate cancer patients and their loved ones. My <a href="http://www.myprostatecancerroadmap.com/">Prostate Cancer Roadmap </a>helps these patients and those who care about them navigate, via a GPS format, a plethora of issues related to the disease, including health and wellness, work and relationships – as well as more difficult topics, such as sex and intimacy. This resource offers two paths – one for men with advanced prostate cancer and the other for family, friends and caregivers – to help address their related, but unique, needs.</p>

<blockquote><p>So…it’s been almost 4 days since I apologized here for our Motrin advertising. What an unbelievable 4 days it’s been. Believe me when I say we’ve been taking our own headache medicine here lately!</p>
<p>Btw &#8211; if you’re confused by this &#8211; we removed our Motrin ad campaign from the marketplace on Sunday because we realized through your feedback that we had missed the mark and insulted many moms. We didn’t mean to…but we did. We&#8217;ve been able to get most of the ads out of circulation, but those in magazines will, unfortunately, be out there for a while.</p>
<p>We are listening to you, and we know that&#8217;s the best place to start as we move ahead. More to come on that. </p>
<p>In the end, we have been reminded of age-old lessons that are tried and true: </p>
<p>          When you make a mistake &#8211; own up to it, and say you’re sorry. </p>
<p>          Learn from that mistake. </p>

<p>This weekend, a lot was said about Motrin on Twitter and in the blogosphere.  Unfortunately, it was not the kind of conversation that we here at McNeil had hoped to be at the center of.  </p>
<p>For those who haven&#8217;t been following <a href="http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/17/moms-and-motrin/">this</a>, it all began when we ran an advertisement online over the weekend that talked about babywearing &#8211; which is a term that we used to describe carrying a child in a sling or wrap. </p>
<p>It was meant to engender sympathy and appreciation for all that parents do for their kids, but did so through an attempt at humor that missed the mark and many moms found offensive. </p>
<p>Now as you can imagine, we certainly didn&#8217;t mean to offend moms through our advertising.  As a mom of three girls, I understand many of the comments made and agree that we know what&#8217;s best for our kids and for ourselves. </p>
<p>On behalf of McNeil, I&#8217;m sorry if you found this advertisement insulting. We are are in the process of removing it from our <a href="http://www.motrin.com/">website</a>.  Unfortunately, it will take longer for us to remove this advertisement from magazines as several are currently on newsstands and in distribution.</p>
<p>One bright spot is that we have learned through this process &#8211; in particular, the importance of paying close attention to the conversations that are taking place online. It has also brought home the importance of taking a broader look at what we say and how it may be interpreted</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I see that both the <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/08/25/adhd-johnson-johnson-and-debbie-phelps-michaels-mom/">WSJ Health Blog </a>and <a href="http://adweek.blogs.com/adfreak/2008/08/debbie-phelps-h.html">AdFreak</a> picked up on the fact that Debbie Phelps, Michael&#8217;s mom, has recently become a much sought-after spokesperson.</p>
<p>What they both neglected to explore, however, was that as a spokesperson for Johnson &#038; Johnson&#8217;s McNeil Pediatrics business, Debbie has been providing her thoughts on being a mom of child with ADHD to a page the McNeil Pediatrics created on Facebook earlier this summer.  </p>
<p>My son has ADD, and I know how tough it can be to get good advice about what you should be doing to help your child live up to his or her potential.  The schools say one thing, the doctors say something else &#8211; and meanwhile the poor kid hates being told they “learn differently.&#8221;  For me, getting advice from other parents who had lived through the same ordeal was about the only way I was even able to <em>begin </em> to figure out how to help my son. </p>
<p>Now to be fair, this Facebook page, <a href="http://www.new.facebook.com/profile.php?id=812199908#/ADHDMoms">ADHD Moms</a>, still isn&#8217;t all that interactive.  Though visitors can download podcasts, articles and participate in instant polls, they can’t post comments to the wall on the page.  What they can do, though, is use their own Facebook pages to connect with other ADHD Moms fans.  It’s a baby step, to be sure, but I understand the team is looking at other steps they can take to make it easier for people to share their insights into caring for kids with ADHD. </p>

<p>In partnership with our sister company, LifeScan, we have managed to link the full-feature Animas insulin pump with the world’s leading OneTouch meter, but this time, they talk to each other! Not only that, you can use the meter as a remote control. Cool, huh? </p>
<p>One of the biggest issues facing people with Type 1 diabetes is that everybody knows your business. Sitting at a meal with friends, if a pumper needs to give herself insulin, she takes out the pump and programs it. The folks in our R&#038;D group (imagine them hanging out playing ping-pong in the “Innovation Room” coming up with new ways to help our pumpers) thought, wouldn’t it be great if she could control her pump remotely to make it more discreet? </p>
<p>With OneTouch Ping, that pumper can leave her pump on her belt or in her tank top and just tell it what to do with a device the size of a cell phone or BlackBerry. Same goes for the mom of the 4 year-old type 1 child who catches him at a birthday party to test his blood sugar. Now, she can give him insulin remotely from the meter as he’s running back to the moon bounce. It may seem like a little thing, but when you have diabetes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a lifetime, it makes a difference.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today, I’m sitting in the press room at the company’s Medical Devices &#038; Diagnostics and Consumer Business Review.  The title of this event is a bit of a mouthful, but then again, what’s being served up today is a generous serving of the Johnson &#038; Johnson pie. </p>
<p>In fact, the businesses being discussed comprise about 59% of the company’s sales in 2007 &#8211; or about $36.2 billion dollars. </p>
<p>Some highlights are touched on in a <a href="http://www.investor.jnj.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=314171">press release </a>that was issued this AM (and you can also listen in on the <a href="http://www.investor.jnj.com/webcasts-presentations.cfm">webcast</a> if you&#8217;d like), but for the rest of this morning &#8211; and on into this afternoon &#8212; business leaders from the consumer, medical devices and diagnostics businesses will talk about the current state of their businesses  and what’s on the burner for tomorrow.  </p>
<p>As Chief Financial Officer Dominic Caruso outlined all of the company’s businesses to set the tone for today, I was struck once again by the breadth of Johnson &#038; Johnson.  Through it&#8217;s operating companies, Johnson &#038; Johnson is the largest medical technology business in the world, the sixth largest pharmaceutical company, the third largest biotech company, the world’s largest seller of over-the-counter medicines and sells some of the most well-known consumer brands in the world  &#8211; including many that are more than 100 years old.  </p>
<p>It is perhaps that breadth of business that has helped the company to consistently increase sales over the past 75 years, post earnings increases consistently over the past 24 years, and increase its dividend over the past 46 years &#8212; all points that Dominic touched on this AM. </p>

		<title>We’ve Come a Long Way &#8211; Camp Baby</title>

<p>After planning for months and going through some challenging days before Camp Baby even began, I must admit I had a few butterflies as I entered the Heldrich Hotel in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Brunswick,_New_Jersey">New Brunswick</a>.   I mean, I knew we had put together a fun and educational program, but still…  </p>
<p>Turns out, I ended learning as much – if not more – then the mommy bloggers who attended our Camp.  I know many of the bloggers in attendance have already posted their recaps of the event, (such as <a href="http://www.fromdatestodiapers.com/2008/04/camp-baby-day-two.html">here</a>, <a href="http://www.socalmom.net/socal_stuff/2008/04/my-mommy-went-t.html">here</a> and <a href="http://chickychickybabyreviews.blogspot.com/2008/04/camp-baby-good-bad-and-anal-leakage.html">here</a>) but I thought I’d give you some of my favorite moments:  </p>
<p><strong>A night of laughter </strong>- Kicking off Camp Baby with Bravo’s “Top Chef” member Ted Allen was tons of fun.  It was a way for everyone to enjoy a relaxing night of laughter, meet each other and set the tone for the entire conference.   My personal highlight was when I told everyone that breakfast started at 6:30 AM the next day instead of 7:30 AM.  I almost had a revolt on my hands &#8212;  but quickly put it down by explaining that was “my” call time for breakfast, not theirs –the crowd roared in laughter.  </p>
<p><strong>Eye-Opening Moment</strong> – As a communications professional, I’ve been working with traditional media for more than 15 years, but Camp Baby brought home to me how different things are now.  When introducing a speaker, I looked out into the audience and saw more than 50 computers open and women happily Twittering. For me, it confirmed that the media climate has transformed and so must we all.   </p>
<p><strong>Hugs, Common Ground And Fresh Beginnings</strong> &#8211; Without any doubt, my absolute favorite part was meeting all the bloggers and learning from them.  (Some <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/663996@N25/">photos </a> of Camp Baby for your viewing pleasure &#8212; and, yes, I&#8217;m in there too&#8230;) Gaining insights and starting this new dialogue was very meaningful to all of us involved.  I also appreciated all of the hugs (can never get enough) and kind words.   I felt humbled by the entire experience.  </p>
<p>So what were my key learnings?  </p>
<p>·         While having virtual connection is the way of the world, there is nothing like real in-person contact.  Having the opportunity to actually speak directly to each of these bloggers was invaluable.  I enjoyed every single conversation I had.  </p>
<p>·         When working with bloggers, I firmly believe that perfection is impossible and flaws will always be magnified.   But as long as you are honest and transparent, in the end the benefit will always outweigh the risk.</p>
<p>·         Don’t ever forget that mommy bloggers are unique to the general blogosphere and have their own unique expectations.    While we didn’t anticipate it all at the beginning, we now have a much deeper understanding &#8212; which was the entire point of doing something like this in the first place.  Ultimately, building what I hope will be a long-lasting relationship with these 56 bloggers was well worth it all!  </p>
<p>But perhaps most importantly, Camp Baby gave me and my colleagues a chance to connect with these women in a real and meaningful way.  I truly respect all of them for their unique perspectives and individuality.     We’ve Come a Long Way Camp Baby and we know this is just the beginning of a long road ahead.  </p>
