In light of the acquisition that was announced bright and early this morning, I thought I’d share a few photos of the products that China’s Dabao Cosmetics Co. will add to our consumer group’s portfolio:

BlogHer 2008: 1,000 Women Bloggers and Me

Actually, I’m exaggerating a bit – there were a bunch of us guys there , but we were definitely a tiny minority.

In many positive ways, this conference is unique, but on the other hand, a BlogHer is a blogger, is a blogger. And I’m finding there is ample common ground, information sharing and interests between all of us.

One thing that you can’t help noticing is the amazing positive energy here. It’s palpable. It’s also extremely well organized, with fabulous snack foods – danish, Snickers, popcorn, chocolate, even Swedish Fish at the Sesame St. booth. It is also striking how non-commercial this is. Even though there are sponsors (Johnson & Johnson was represented here via its corporate sponsorship of Safe Kids Worldwide organization), there is surprisingly little “pitching” going on. Maybe I’m stereotyping, but it seems that there is a female sensibility for “sharing” and connecting, as opposed to a masculine one of “selling” and deal making.

Speaking of which, I’m reluctantly being impressed by Twitter, which the participants here seem to love. While it seems a bit like “social stalking” to me, it certainly is an interesting way to keep in touch. I noticed a Twitter from BlogHer yesterday which read: “I’m amused that there are men here at BlogHer…they’re smarties! ;-) ” I was kind of amused by THAT! But I think she may be right.

You and Your ‘Fridge

Rob just posted some more videos to the Johnson & Johnson health channel – this time about health and nutrition — and that remind people who are looking to shed a few pounds and improve their health that they sometimes need to change their personal relationships with their refrigerators. The videos include this one that provides five tips for a healthier lifestyle, such as exercising regularly, eating three veggies and fruits a day and cutting back on sweetened drinks. I have no problem with staying away from sugary drinks — I’m not a big fan of soda — but as someone who likes a glass of red wine with dinner, I’ve gotta remember the final tip about the calories in alcoholic drinks… :-)

Robots Redux

I’ve was on vacation over the 4th of July — and have been trying to catch up ever since — but before I left, the Corporate Headquarters building played host to teams of high school students that we support to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Reading about this competition is one thing, but to really get into the spirit of it you have to attend one of the competitions and go down into the pits to meet with the crews — and having the robots come to New Brunswick gave those people who work at headquarters here a chance to do just that.

One Small Step

So where do you go for information about how to treat cuts and bruises, obesity or mental illness? Where do you find information on fitness and nutrition and the peril of fast foods?

Have to admit, when I need that kind of information, I go online and do a search. I look through loads of materials – some from physicians, some from people and some from companies.

So when I was faced with the task of trying to figure out what to do with an entire library of videos that provide basic, helpful information about different diseases and treatments, it was almost a no-brainer to place them online.

Last week – after months of work — the Johnson & Johnson health channel was launched on You Tube. On it, I’m uploading videos produced by Dr. Nancy Snyderman when she worked at Johnson & Johnson. Each two-to-three minute video addresses various health-related topics such as teenage obesity, nutrition, aging, heart disease, cancer and mental illness. Though we may make products that can be used to treat some of the conditions Dr. Snyderman talks about, no brand names are mentioned. After all, this is about health information and advice -as provided by Dr. Snyderman.

Here’s a sample:

What struck me as I went through Dr. Snyderman’s videos in preparation for putting them online was just how much stuff we have. Health care companies like Johnson & Johnson have a wealth of information and knowledge that they have acquired over the years – in part because it is through this knowledge and understanding that we can develop new products, treatments and services that can help in the delivery of healthcare. But all too often, much of this knowledge isn’t shared with people, physicians or patients for a variety of reasons (such as regulatory oversight, confidentiality and other business concerns…)

Yet as I observe the ongoing dialog about health-related matters online, I can’t help but think that companies like Johnson & Johnson can be more involved in this conversation – even if it is simply to share some basic information that have been gathered over the years.

I’d like to think that perhaps this new health channel goes a small step towards getting us more involved with this discussion. Hmmm… one small step for Johnson & Johnson, one giant one for… well, you get the idea…

It’s a . . . System

Melissa Katz, formerly of CNTO411 fame, is now global director of Corporate Communications at Animas, and she just can’t get that blogging bug out of her system. ;)

Today, she offers this post to JNJBTW about some exciting news in the diabetes care world.

Welcome back, Melissa.

Animas, Johnson & Johnson’s insulin pump company, is proud to welcome the newest member of our family, OneTouch® Ping™ glucose management system (see picture: awwww!!).
OneTouch Ping

In partnership with our sister company, LifeScan, we have managed to link the full-feature Animas insulin pump with the world’s leading OneTouch meter, but this time, they talk to each other! Not only that, you can use the meter as a remote control. Cool, huh?

One of the biggest issues facing people with Type 1 diabetes is that everybody knows your business. Sitting at a meal with friends, if a pumper needs to give herself insulin, she takes out the pump and programs it. The folks in our R&D group (imagine them hanging out playing ping-pong in the “Innovation Room” coming up with new ways to help our pumpers) thought, wouldn’t it be great if she could control her pump remotely to make it more discreet?

With OneTouch Ping, that pumper can leave her pump on her belt or in her tank top and just tell it what to do with a device the size of a cell phone or BlackBerry. Same goes for the mom of the 4 year-old type 1 child who catches him at a birthday party to test his blood sugar. Now, she can give him insulin remotely from the meter as he’s running back to the moon bounce. It may seem like a little thing, but when you have diabetes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a lifetime, it makes a difference.

Check out the news at www.animascorp.com where you can hear from our pumpers about why insulin therapy was right for them.

Thanks for all your kind wishes. We’re so proud of our growing family.
